EXCELLENCE

ESSEX HEIGHTS RESERVE Mount Waverley, Victoria
Client: City of Monash
Timing: Feb 2023
Surface Type: Synthetic Grass
iDwala was proud to be appointed to lead the design of a new multipurpose sporting facility at Essex Heights Reserve, located near Essex Heights Primary School in Mount Waverley. In close collaboration with the City of Monash, iDwala recognised the unique opportunity this project presented — to create an inclusive space that supports the requirements of special needs students, local sporting clubs, and the broader community.
Historically, Essex Heights Reserve featured three synthetic and three turf cricket training nets but lacked a dedicated futsal space. iDwala’s innovative new design delivers six multipurpose cricket training lanes with retractable netting, enabling flexible use of the space for both cricket and futsal — significantly expanding the facility’s usability.
Several design challenges were thoughtfully addressed throughout this project. The reserve’s native trees needed to be preserved, prompting a layout that carefully avoided root zones while protecting the natural environment. Surrounding footpaths were designed using pervious materials to support rainwater infiltration and promote sustainable water management. Additionally, a new accessible footpath was integrated into the design, connecting Essex Heights Primary School to the reserve — creating a safe, practical, and inclusive route for students with special needs.
iDwala is proud to have contributed to this meaningful and rewarding community project, delivering a space that encourages participation, connection, and inclusive play for all.
